Today’s Liposuction Alternatives
Here, you can learn about the various liposuction alternatives available today. As the
popularity of body sculpting has grown, the number of techniques used to achieve the desired results has also
grown.
There are now so many different Liposuction alternatives that it can be difficult for the
prospective patient to decide what the appropriate option will be for their own individual requirements. We aim to
explain a little about the pro's and con's of the different liposuction alternatives on this page,
and you will be able to find out more about each option elsewhere on this website!
Some of these Liposuction alternatives are widely-available throughout the world, while some of them are more
limited in their availability, with only clinics in some countries being able to provide these treatments. Either
way, it is well-worth your time to learn a little about the technologies available, and what their benefits
are.
Where these alternatives are available world-wide, one option for reducing the costs is to travel abroad for
surgery. Prices are often so much cheaper that even when factoring in the cost of flights and accommodation,
the price is still just a fraction of what you would expect to pay in the US. Liposuction surgeons abroad are often
just as trained and qualified as you would wish for in a reputable US clinic, and are cheaper simply because of the
disparity between infrastructure costs in the US and other countries.

SAL (Suction Assisted Liposuction) & PAL (Power Assisted Liposuction)
Both Suction-Assisted and Power-Assisted Lipo are standards in the field. The
only difference between SAL and PAL is that the power-assisted version requires
the surgeon to make fewer movements. With both Suction Assisted Liposuction and with Power
Assisted Liposuction, a straw-like probe device called a cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue
layers beneath the skin to break up the fat cells and allow them to be pulled out of the body with
suction.
UAL (Ultra Sound Assisted Liposuction) & XUAL
The ultra-sound assisted or UAL technique is used on more
fibrous portions of the body to break up fat with vibration, rather than relying
on the probe. This liposuction procedure may take longer because the ultrasound treatment is followed by the use of
suction to remove the liquefied fat.
XUAL is a similar procedure, except that the ultrasound is applied externally,
through the skin. Some physicians feel this is an advantage that improves patient comfort and reduces blood loss,
although the procedure is not widely used.
WAL (Water Assisted Liposuction)
WAL is water-assisted lipo. It is another of the liposuction alternatives that
loosens the fat tissues making them easier to suction out of the body. A fan-shaped beam of water is pointed at the
fat tissues and immediately suctioned out through the probe. There is usually less swelling when
WAL is used.
Smart Lipo
With Smart Lipo, another of the liposuction alternatives,
laser energy is used to break up fat cells and allow the physician to get a
better look at what is going on beneath the skin. This is said to reduce the risk of injury to
internal organs and increase the amount of fat that can be withdrawn during a set amount of time,
which shortens the surgery, another advantage in terms of safety. In addition, the laser is used to quickly close
blood vessels, thereby reducing blood loss.
Micro Liposuction
Micro Liposuction, an increasingly popular Liposuction
alternative, makes use of a micro cannula, which has the benefits of requiring smaller
incisions, resulting in less trauma to the patient's skin and tissues, and also being capable of
far more targeted fat loss than would normally be the case. This makes Micro Liposuction suitable
for very small, specific areas of the face and body, such as with Double Chin Liposuction.
Micro Liposuction also makes it possible for the procedure to be carried out without the use of
anesthesia, which in turn reduces the down-time for patient, reducing the risks, and often reducing the
price, as well.
Non-Invasive Liposuction Alternatives
In 2010, two non-invasive procedures were approved
by the US FDA for the reduction of body fat. The two devices are the
Zerona low-level laser and the Zeltiq cryolipolysis device.
The Zerona laser disrupts the membranes surrounding the fat cells causing them to leak the
triglycerides and other material they contain.
Zeltiq cryolipolysis makes use of low, but not freezing temperatures, to cause fat cell
death.
Neither of the non-invasive liposuction alternatives requires anesthesia or major surgery.
However, the results may not be as significant as those seen with traditional lipo.
